[Patentcenter] Weird ADS upload error in Patent Center

Hi, Jeff
I watched Director Vidal's portion of the video and there was no discussion about the shutdown of EFS-Web and Private PAIR or the problems with Patent Center. Furthermore, they are apparently hiding the comments. I posted a couple of test comments, and I could not see them.
Welcome to Stalinland.

Kathi Vidal is speaking at the National Inventor Club right now in a live stream: https://www.facebook.com/nationalinventorclub/videos/874433924298168
I have posted a couple of questions about the Patent Center and the pushback by many IP workers. Hope the host will ask a question!

Hi everyone,
I have an update on the disappearance of Japanese characters from files. When it happened to me the first time, I refiled the same document using EFS-Web, and all was fine. Now that EFS-Web is going away, of course, that no longer remains an option. And it happened to me again in the past week: I uploaded a Japanese patent reference to Patent Center (and--this is key--Patent Center had NO COMPLAINT about the document), and when I downloaded it, the Japanese characters on all but the first page were gone. Again I re-filed using EFS-Web, and all was fine again.
This time I reported it, and I got some information that I wanted to share.
Apparently, after Patent Center had ingested documents, a downstream "Event hub" "further disseminates work." After an investigation, it was determined that "some issues were present in the document (e.g., image layers present, MacOS being used) that could have created the content loss." (Why didn't Patent Center pop any error or warning messages?)
They are exploring solutions in the "downstream systems to better accept documents with these issues."
It was emphasized to me that this is *not* a Patent Center issue but rather a "downstream issue [that] appears to be an isolated issue likely as a result of the document submitted to the Office."
So there you go. Patent Center is totally fine!
Best regards,
Krista

I do this regularly, but after submission, information still goes missing (e.g., all Japanese characters from a seemingly-acceptable file, as I reported a couple of weeks ago). I haven't found a way to see ahead of time what the USPTO's processing will do to a document after it has been submitted. Thus, for new applications, I go to Private PAIR to download everything shortly after filing (because it takes forever for the files to show up in Patent Center), and for existing applications, I immediately check the file history to see whether anything went wrong. And if something went wrong, I use EFS-Web to try again.

Krista

True -- but the reviewer can click back to "Upload Documents" tab, click the three dots on the right, and then click PDF -> and download the ADS.
Tedious, but possible to review the ADS as-uploaded.
Or, just click "Download all documents" -- which I usually do anyway when reviewing so I see them as they were split up.

Agreed – I experience this as well. Then, if you submit the third option, and you post the ADS using that route (submit later or attach with no autofill), you can not open it to review it so the filing attorney has to have a lot of faith in the poster.

Yes -- we receive this issue on an apparently random basis. We've tried to re-fill the form, etc. Usually we just give up and convert to filing "without an ADS" and then upload it as a 'normal document' that we then tag as an ADS. It makes more work for the USPTO, and it increases risk of typos which we then have to correct. But, we've not been able to figure out a way around it when it decides to reject an ADS.
Interestingly enough, a client we have that has done a couple of his own provisional filings was telling me how nice the USPTO website and interfaces were compared to most other government interfaces he had to deal with. I was a little surprised.

Yesterday I also received that error message. I closed the filing and started all over again. On the second try I received a warning saying something like the ADS wasn’t the most recent ADS form, and that the PTO may not be able to pull the information from it. I was able to move past the message and complete the submission..
The issues made absolutely no sense, as the ADS that was used in this case was pulled from the PTO website that morning???

Subject: [Patentcenter] Weird ADS upload error in Patent Center
Good morning all – I’m not sure if this has been discussed before or added to the “bugs list” or not.
This morning I tried to upload an ADS to Patent Center using the middle option “Upload ADS (PDF)” like I usually do. For some reason it didn’t like my ADS, but it doesn’t tell me what is wrong with the document to fix it. The screenshot below is the error I got.
How is that even remotely helpful?? I tried exporting the data and importing it into a new ADS form (downloaded from the USPTO cite) as well. I’m assuming whatever error is in the current ADS imported in (I assumed it would but it was worth a shot). It was a fairly large ADS so I didn’t want to manually retype everything all over again to try and fix an error that was unknown to me, only to get the same error again. I checked all the data and made sure nothing looked out of the ordinary, but nothing I tried seemed to get it to upload successfully. I ended up having to just upload it under the “No ADS, or Attached ADS (PDF)” option instead and it worked fine.
It would be really helpful if there is some sort of error that the USPTO actually tells you what is wrong with it so you can fix it. Has anyone else come across something like this and figured out how to fix whatever the error was with the document?
Thanks in advance and TGIF!
Victoria
