The PTO’s response to the “summary information” complaint is a decent after-the-fact response. But the response shows the PTO did a terrible job of UX design in the first place, apparently without any effort to get feedback during the design process. Feedback after launch is better than nothing, but certainly worse than feedback while the design is being created.

And I wonder how much annoyance could have been avoided initially regarding the new syntax for searching if the PTO had explained why the search syntax had to change well before the system was launched, instead of in response to complaints. “We know it’s going to be different, but we could no longer use a proprietary syntax and were forced to use an open-source syntax.”

Did everyone see the attached article? I tried to send this to the list last week but it apparently never got posted. It is from WTR and the original may have been paywalled, but my office made this pdf copy for internal purposes and I’d like to think this is just fair use between colleagues helping each other out.

It is a PTO response to our criticism of the new search software and I don’t know why the PTO would or should respond only through trade press that puts this behind a paywall.
