[E-trademarks] To Clio or Not to Clio

Lara,
I second Mark's comment. My practice is trademark and copyright law with some related litigation. I have used Clio for about 3 years now, but use it for far more than billing. Before that I was using Timeslips by Sage. That used to be a great program when it first started, cost $99 but eventually became too complex, was taken over by a larger software company, and so I wanted something a little simpler but still flexible. I was also using Time Matters, a Lexis owned software, but it was far too cumbersome to use. 3 years ago I started using Clio and as they say, "never looked back." Here is why I like Clio.
1. Flexible
2. Great support, both chat, and by phone.
3. Substantial customer base means that there is better opportunities to find bugs and eliminate them. This is one case where I am pleased that this is a SAAS program.
4. Whether they are owned by a private equity group, they don't act like it. Good personal attention from support.
5. I use it for:
*
maintaining and organizing client contact and other information
*
have sets of custom fields set up, including for U.S. and foreign trademarks
*
maintaining time records for billing. I dictate my time, transfer time into Clio and run billing at the first of the month. Easy to modify and change billing. Easily customizable, though there is a learning curve on all of this.
*
Integrates with other programs such as Alt Legal and numerous others.
*
Rudimentary document assembly which is sufficient for me.
*
Fairly easy to forward important emails to client folder on Clio
*
Great for having clients pay bills. They have their own system but also integrate with LawPay.
*
Surprisingly useful mobile app which I often use simply to find client phone number and dial from my phone.
*
and more
Yes, the downside is the learning curve. I still continue to learn more as I use it, just as adjusting to Microsoft Word seemed impossible when, if anyone remembers, I was dragged into that program after the simplicity of WordPefect.
Regards,
Paul

Clio has been great for our 2-attorney firm. We’ve only been using it for billing. It is intuitive enough that my techno-phobic partner finds invoicing easy and straightforward.
Thanks,
Mark

Currently, Practice Panther (PP) is the practice management software we use
But more and more recently, it's been giving us the blues
We're not tech savvy enough to create our own, like Gerben & Pelton
So if you use one, won't you tell us, whose praises you feel like beltin'?
And if, to the contrary, you can't stand it (as we felt about Lawmatics)
Please share that too, & save us some pain, but in a way for us that will be less drastic
We need something simple, and PP and especially Lawmatics are far too complex
We're one atty, one admin and a paralegal just lookin' for what's best
