Doesn't everyone that is going to file need to register with Trademark Office in order to access the forms? Wasn't that the reason for registration in order to avoid Chinese applicants from overloading the system?

A few days ago, for the very first time, I clicked around in Trademark Center. This was in a shared desktop situation where I was helping somebody click around in it. The person has a plan of filing pro se a few days from now. So our goal was to click around in Trademark Center together and see what the workflow is like.
I happened to be already logged in to MyUSPTO at the time. And I clicked around to commence use of Trademark Center. I was sharing my screen with the would-be future pro se filer.
What jumped out at me was, it absolutely refused to allow the session to move forward pro se. It demanded that an attorney be identified for the to-be-filed application.
Maybe others have more experience with Trademark Center. Is there a way to use Trademark Center pro se?
Is it simply that I had already been logged in at MyUSPTO? That was what made it impossible to proceed pro se?
