[E-trademarks] USPTO proposing fee increases

The PTO justifies the large increases in post-reg fees by saying the percentage of registrations that get maintained is declining, so they’re jacking the fees on post-reg “to keep barriers to entry low for new applicants.” Which will, no doubt, result in even fewer registrations being maintained. At some point, I wonder if some registrants will simply stop maintaining registrations and apply for new ones because of the difference in costs.

Short story for applications:


  1.  Teas PLUS going away (sort of)
  2.  New standard app fee of $350 per class, PLUS $200 per class if you don’t use the TM ID manual (so TEAS-PLUS type filings go up from $250-$350 per class, Regular TEAS-type filings go up from $350-$550)
  3.  Additional charges for descriptions over 1K characters per class.
