[E-trademarks] Wayback Machine

Oh, wow, great. An invaluable tool that has been more or less the same for a million years and did pretty much exactly what those of us who use it needed it to do is now going to be available through a middle[folk]. What could go wrong?

But to clarify here, when I read the article it sounds like Google isn’t taking over the Wayback – it ended:

“However, the link to archived webpages will not be available in instances where the rights holder has opted out of having their site archived or if the webpage violates content policies”

I’m assuming that means, Google will not offer you the archived versions if they don’t meet Google’s standards/requirements with the Google search results? I’m hoping that this does not flow backward to the Wayback Machine, applying Google’s content policies to the Internet Archive. That would be … sad.

PS awesome meme, Ed!

They literally just launched an initiative to allow access to the Wayback machine through Google search

New Feature Alert: Access Archived Webpages Directly Through Google Search | Internet Archive Blogs<https://blog.archive.org/2024/09/11/new-feature-alert-access-archived-webpages-directly-through-google-search/#:~:text=To%20access%20this%20new%20feature,Machine%20page%20for%20that%20website.>

I haven't tried it yet but it sort of made me sad to hear the news... It felt like the Wayback Machine was a secret tool only those in the know knew about :-)

But I wonder if this could be a work around to their internal issues.

best,

Nancy

I get the same result. Let’s hope it’s a temporary technical issue and not related to the ongoing legal issues.
