[E-trademarks] Unicode Character Watch: New ∙ Raised Dot Via USPTO Edits?

Lately, I'm seeing a new raised dot character in wordmark entries, namely ∙ (decimal 8729), except the occurrences of ∙ appear to be added by the USPTO.  That is, when Pre-Exam performs their initial processing, they appear to be adding this Unicode raised dot character instead of the standard character · (the middle dot, centered dot character with decimal value 183).  Doesn't that seem odd?  Why deviate from the standard character set when adding a raised dot to wordmarks?

Today, the search for that Unicode raised dot character, namely the WD:(*∙*) AND LD:true search, retrieves the 39 relatively new applications (listed below, decreasing SN order).  I did not check all 39 trademarks, but those I did check did NOT have the Unicode raised dot character in the raw application, confirming that edits performed by the USPTO added the new raised dot character.  Then again, how often do you search for raised dots in wordmarks, even in standard character marks?
