Maybe. I've just started experimenting with Greek characters (which I'm somewhat familiar with from majoring in math) and Cyrillic characters. I've barely started with Hebrew, Arabic and Chinese characters.

Query
ResultCount
CM:/.*[α-ω].*/ AND LD:true

CM:( *Α* *α* *Β* *β* *Γ* *γ* *Δ* *δ* *Ε* *ε* *Ζ* *ζ* *Η* *η* *Θ* *θ* *Ι* *ι* *Κ* *κ* *Λ* *λ* *Μ* *μ* *Ν* *ν* *Ξ* *ξ* *Ο* *ο* *Π* *π* *Ρ* *ρ* *Σ* *σ* *ς* *Τ* *τ* *Υ* *υ* *Φ* *φ* *Χ* *χ* *Ψ* *ψ* *Ω* *ω* ) AND LD:true

CM:( *А* *Б* *В* *Г* *Д* *Е* *Ж* *З* *И* *Й* *К* *Л* *М* *Н* *О* *П* *Р* *С* *Т* *У* *Ф* *Х* *Ц* *Ч* *Ш* *Щ* *Ъ* *Ы* *Ь* *Э* *Ю* *Я* ) AND LD:true

CM:( *а* *б* *в* *г* *д* *е* *ж* *з* *и* *й* *к* *л* *м* *н* *о* *п* *р* *с* *т* *у* *ф* *х* *ц* *ч* *ш* *щ* *ъ* *ы* *ь* *э* *ю* *я* ) AND LD:true

While the first pair of searches (Greek lower-case range search versus most/all Greek characters search) return the same number of records, and the second pair of searches (upper case Cyrillic versus lower case Cyrillic?) return the same number of records, it appears that character range searches may be effective and that searches can use UPPER CASE or lower case, but since the number of records retrieved for these 4 searches are so small, I'm hesitant to conclude that variations are equivalent and usually try all versions in the same search session to see if the results change. When the hit counts get higher (at least a few thousand), maybe we'll have some confidence about equivalent searches.

The 15 results for WD:( *а* *б* *в* *г* *д* *е* *ж* *з* *и* *й* *к* *л* *м* *н* *о* *п* *р* *с* *т* *у* *ф* *х* *ц* *ч* *ш* *щ* *ъ* *ы* *ь* *э* *ю* *я* ) AND LD:true may be of interest - Cyrillic(?) characters occurring in wordmarks (including the weird standard character mark I reported earlier today).

You can search alpha through omega? That's fascinating.

The search WD:/.*[α-ω].*/ AND ST:true provides some other atypical search results. For the 8 trademarks returned, all have a variation of µ - the micro sign standard character with a decimal value of 181 - in the drawings. However, notice that the wordmark entries all begin with Μ - the Unicode character with decimal value 924 (assuming my Excel character checker is correct).

If you copy/paste the first letter Μ of the first (and presumably any other) trademark listed above into the search bar with the * search operator to form the search WD:*Μ* AND ST:true, instead of getting the multitude of live standard character marks with the standard letter M somewhere in the wordmark, you get the same 8 trademarks of this list that have the Unicode letter Μ (with decimal value 924 - part of the Greek character set of Unicode characters). Conversely, the search WD:*µ* AND ST:true with the standard character µ from the standard character list retrieves 140 live standard character marks with µ occurring in the drawings and wordmark entries. Quite a difference, huh? And I'll bet you haven't been searching both Μ and µ for your LOC searches of the µ (micro sign).

Happy Trademarking,
Ken Boone

Subject: [E-trademarks] Try Not To Laugh! 99028710 - БЪЛГАРИКА (A Standard Character Mark)

Introducing 99028710, the standard character mark БЪЛГАРИКА filed 5 February 2025.

[previously viewed Image for 99028710, select for more details]

Mark Literal Elements:
БЪЛГАРИКА
Standard Character Claim:
Yes. The mark consists of standard characters without claim to any particular font style, size, or color.
Mark Drawing Type:
4 - STANDARD CHARACTER MARK
Transliteration:
The Bulgarian characters in this mark transliterate to BULGARICA and this has no meaning in a foreign language.

Based on this new application, I must conclude that the new Trademark Center electronic application system does NOT check that the characters submitted for a standard character mark actually occur on the USPTO's standard character list.

I fully recommend that you open the raw application on TSDR and view the 5 pages of the application.  Then tell me the proper pronunciation of this standard character mark!  My Bulgarian is more than just a little bit rusty. ;-}

Happy Presidents' Day Holiday,
Ken Boone
