If only WebTMS would add more automated international dispute deadlines.  We have been pushing them to at least add in some basic China deadlines and a few other countries where we see high volume.

We actually stepped away from AltLegal about a year ago, and went with WebTMS.  Our primary concern was that we were having problems getting good reporting out of AltLegal to give to our clients with larger portfolios.

Also, with all these systems, we have found that the data synchronization from non-US trademark offices is often unreliable/problematic. Because of sometimes months-long delays in getting the automated data sync, we routinely have registration certificates or other developments well before the data comes automatically.  Sync functions also do not tend to include things like office actions and their deadlines.  Finally, we found that when we manually docket an item but have data sync turned on, the data sync will override it, which can be problematic in certain situations.  Risks will depend of course on where your clients are filing, so just use and configure any data sync with care - it's not a panacea.

As my firm and I also do a lot of patents, we have recently started using AppColl, which has more robust patent docketing features, and after seeing that program’s trademark docketing/services, I would say Alt Legal is significantly better with trademarks.

Alt Legal is less fully automated for international than it is with US (it will add US matters automatically to your docket when it sees your email address(es) in the correspondence field), but it does update and docket international trademark matters.  When Alt Legal flags information in one of your foreign marks has changed at the local IP office, it includes them in a “Trademark Data Review” section of the activity email they send out based on your settings, so you would know something has changed and be able to check it.  When a foreign renewal is filed and you mark it filed, it will automatically docket the next renewal.

The people at Alt Legal are also great to work with when you have questions, and they offer additional services on top of the docketing (2d watch, Application Match). I can second that AltLegal is good for domestic trademark management. The need to physically enter foreign properties manually is an issue. I know they don’t always update their own rules frequently, but when I was using CPI they were always on top of those.  It also doesn’t auto-populate TTAB matters like some programs do.

But if you have a small or no int’l docket and have a reliable person to stay on top of what *does* have to be entered, the price is temptingly low, that’s for sure.

Alt-Legal has been good for international, to a pint:  it does not update the status of a trademark in all countries “automatically”, but then again, only as fast as those countries update their own databases.  Some require manual input.  But it’s nice to plug in a new registration outside of the U.S., and it populates in Alt Legal.
