It does not mean that. A lot of them will effectively have to quit, which will mean that hundreds of new examiners will need to be hired and trained. They'll have to because many were hired specifically to work remotely, and many are the "second" income in their homes, meaning that the primary earner is unlikely to be able to relocate or if in the DC area, might suddenly have an unsustainable commute.

Also there's no room for them at the moment, so the PTO will need to get a lot more office space very quickly unless they intend to wait until they know how many employees have no choice but to quit.

And I just heard from a number of relations and friends that there is a broad hiring freeze, so that could hamper hiring replacements.

So who knows?

So does this mean that the backlog of trademark applications will slip another 6 months or so when the remote Examining Attorneys will be forced to move back to the DC area, forgoing the opportunity to spend most of their time working remotely?  I suspect not everyone will be happy with this and the Office will need to retrain a whole new batch of Examining Attorneys.

Hello fellow trademark practitioners.  See https://blog.oppedahl.com/yes-she-must-be-running-the-uspto-now/ .  As far as I can see, somebody at the USPTO must have yanked all of the trademark registration certificates that were supposed to issue today, that bear Derrick Brent's signature.  And now maybe they are scrambling to create and cryptographically sign new ones with the signature of the new Acting Director.

Has anybody actually seen any registration certificate yet today?
