[E-trademarks] Altered Signature

Dear Group,

Under the old TM system, I would sometimes see characters that have been changed after the application is filed.  For example, sometimes information like an email address will be printed in TSDR with characters that make no sense.  I have had one examiner advise me that they are aware that their system sometimes changes characters on their end.

I just got four office actions related to two tm apps that when filed, had  typed e-signatures on the applications.  What the system produced was /???/ in the filing receipt.  The examiner now wants to charge $100 per class and treat the applications as unsigned.

I was under the impression it did not matter what the applicant typed between forward slashes as long as they typed something.  Is this correct?  Any way to protest the $100 fees without paying more money to the USPTO?   Any chance I am going to be successful in convincing them this is their system's error?

As an aside, I have been getting a lot of office actions that I do not understand and they are all on foreign applications.
