On June 23, 2025, a group of legal ethics scholars filed an ethics
complaint with the New York Attorney Grievance Committee against nine major
law firms that capitulated to executive orders issued by President
Trump. (Click

view). The complaint alleges that these firms—rather than challenging the
orders in court—entered into agreements to provide nearly $1 billion in
legal services to causes aligned with the President’s political agenda, in
exchange for avoiding punitive government action. According to the
complaint, these deals undermine core ethical duties by surrendering the
firms’ independence, allowing a nonlawyer (the President) to dictate
professional judgment, creating unwaivable conflicts of interest, and
potentially constituting bribery or extortion.


The firms are further accused of misleading clients and the public by
downplaying the impact of these commitments. The complaint asks whether
such conduct violates multiple provisions of the New York Rules of
Professional Conduct, including Rules 1.7, 5.4, 7.1, and 8.4.
