The plot below shows the counts of pending applications on Tuesdays for the last 6 months (FY 25) and the corresponding counts of pending applications on Tuesdays last year (FY 24). Note the upward spike for FY 25 as the date of the new application fees approached in mid-January, then the general decline of pending applications since January 18th. Contrast that with the trend for FY 24, when pendng application counts generally rose from late January through early June.

These are simple application counts via the LD:true NOT (SN:89* RN:*) search, not counts of active classes (the preferred metric of the USPTO).
While the count of pending applications has been declining since mid-January, the count of pending applications still remains well over 930 thousand. The count of pending applications has been over 600 thousand since 01/31/19 - that we're nowhere near the good old days when the count of pending applications was under 600 thousand (though USPTO staffing has likely increased significantly since 2019). And there is the alternate speculation that perhaps the recent decline in the count of pending applications is because new applications are declining - that we're headed towards a recession.
Happy Trademarking,
Ken Boone

Good points. I think good reason to be cautiously optimistic.

Yes! All of the applications I filed in late November through December seem to be moving to being assigned to Examiners (and most have OAs or publication approval already)! I am not getting too excited, though, as I expect that there was a glut of filings right before the rule changes in January that might slow things down again. Although, the new ID rules should make the (national) applications filed after the new rules simpler to examine and thus, speed up application examination again?

I just received an Office Action on a trademark application filed in December 2024, less than 6 months from filing. Anyone else seeing this?
