As I understand your fact pattern, I think that is expanding the mark from a special form mark to a standard character mark which would not be allowed. The standard character mark needs to be a new application but it can claim ownership of the old registration if the old registration can be maintained.

Client's registration covers a combined word/design mark.  The "O" in the word portion of the mark contains graphics.  Client has removed the  graphics from the O in the mark.  Current use of the mark is just a word mark.  Acceptable specimen or a material alteration for Section 8 & 15 purposes?
