[E-trademarks] Help on quick, down, and dirty learning the new advanced search features

A new search theory: the search syntax GS3:/.*009.*widget.*/ is effective for retrieving all records with the single term widget in class 009.

My immediate reaction: Where did the search field GS3 come from? I recalled the GS2 search field but not the GS3 search field. Checking the online help, following are the relevant list of search fields.

FM
Full mark

  * Contains exact literal element of the mark
  * Use for exact match searches

GS
Goods and services

  * Contains the international class, the U.S. class, and the text of the goods and services description

GS2
Enhanced goods and services

  * Contains the international class, the U.S. class, and the text of the goods and services description with stemming and plurals
  * For example, searching GS2:“nutritional supplement”

IC
International class

  * Use three digits, for example IC:025

I still don't see the GS3 search field, where I'm assuming the search fields were listed in alphabetical order. Is some other section of the online help relevant? Or are additions needed to the online help?

I then began looking for counter examples, suspecting older trademarks that use the US Class as the primary classification system might cause this search syntax to fail. Literally, my first check was serial number 72148474 with the following GS entry (which surprisingly copied fairly well from TSDR).

For:
GARBAGE CAN DEODORIZERS, KITCHEN AND BATHROOM DEODORANTS, AND HOUSEHOLD AND PLANT INSECTICIDES
International Class(es):
003
U.S Class(es):
006 - Primary Class
Class Status:
ACTIVE
Basis:
1(a)
First Use:
May 15, 1950
Use in Commerce:
May 15, 1950

My test search: GS3:/.*003.*deodorants.*/ which returned 33,566 results for GS3:/.*003.*deodorants.*/ so I'm thinking I got the search syntax correct. Modifying that search to

GS3:/.*003.*deodorants.*/ AND LD:true AND SN:72*

returned 3 hits but 72148474 was not among those 3 hits. Sorry, but the search system decided that it would not export my search session, a bug I seem to encounter fairly frequently. So it goes.

Another example is GS3:/.*009.*INTEGRATED.CIRCUITS.*/ AND LD:true AND SN:72* for which I expected to see 72457899 among the hits. Nope.

Example #3 is GS3:/.*009.*CONVEYOR.BELTS.*/ AND LD:true AND SN:72* for which I expected to see 72441344 among the hits. Nope.

That's 3 examples with specific serial numbers that were not included in the search results. So what am I doing wrong? Or have I presented 3 counter examples to that search theory?

Happy Trademarking,
Ken Boone

A lovely e-TMs listserv lurker kindly shared this with me this morning:

There is a way to search G/S within a class. Would you pass this on anonymously to the list? (I sent it to someone else a few weeks ago and asked for the same assist but I think it landed in their spam folder).

Ex: To search the single term widget in class 9:

GS3:/.*009.*widget.*/

Ex: To search the phrase “online retail store services” in Class 35:

GS3:/.*035.*online.retail.store.services.*/

(The periods operate as spaces in the phrase)

As Ken Boone would say, "Happy Searching!"

This is what I have so far; HUGE thanks to Ken Boone for helping me with it years ago and for updating it when New TESS launched.

If you want to make it a Google doc that we can all share, please do and share the link here.

Thanks!

Do you have a down and dirty cheat sheet or video to help train on the new advanced search system?

I’ve viewed the Help page a bunch, watched the search videos put out by the USPTO for the new system, and none of these things seem intuitive to me.

I’m trying to make a compare sheet from searches in the old system to the new system to help train my brain to remember things like * is now .* and [] don’t go around the search field, but around the alternate search criteria. And using the + sign.

CORNERSTONE

New system: CM:/[ckqx]+[aeiou]+rn+[aeiou]+r+[scz]+t.*/

Old System: *{"ckqx"}orn$r*[bi,ti] and *ston*[bi,ti]

PRIDE

New system: CM:/pr[iey]{0,2}d.*/

Old system: *pr{v:2}d*[bi,ti]

If a comparison sheet already exists and I missed it, forgive me for asking and I would appreciate access.

Thanks team!
