The inability to save would be an absolutely, screamingly, obvious no-go
for me. I always save before sending the draft for signature. Clients can
always come up with surprising changes.
And this "spread out across a lot of screens" is terribly annoying. It's a
sop not only (as you point out) to the portion of filers who are pro se,
but also probably to people using mobile phones to use the system.
Why the USPTO would design this kind of a business system to accommodate
the "hey, you're bored sitting at the bar, why don't you file a trademark
application!" user - I don't know. [Yes, I'm a 'do everything on your phone
hater'...]
