[E-trademarks] Cancellation of a cited registration

A registered mark was cited against my client's application.  The owner did not file the maintenance documents by the end of the one-year window, so I requested suspension once the registration was in the grace period, pending the outcome of the disposition of the registration.  Nothing was filed in the grace period, which ended yesterday.  I'll give it a few more days to make sure nothing shows up in TSDR.  Previously, you could call the post-registration division to inform them and the cancellation would be processed.  However, in calling post-registration today, I was told that they no longer accept third party requests for cancellation of registrations.  And, that if the system didn't automatically cancel the registration, it could take them 6-12 months to manually cancel the registration.  She also suggested calling the TM Assistance Center to reach the Petitions Office as there is no longer a direct line to Petitions.  Neither of those options seem relevant.  So, after checking TSDR again, I was planning on calling the examiner assigned to our application to see about expediting this process.

Has anyone else heard about this change with respect to third party requests? It's been the norm for years.
