[E-trademarks] Registration Certificates for Madrid marks

They are still identified by the 79 series prefix in serial numbers (for now). Is anyone aware of how many other countries identify their registrations as Madrid designations or not?

Katherine and Ken, you inspired a blog article. https://blog.oppedahl.com/uspto-discontinues-recognizing-madrid-protocol-status/ .

It's a recent change. By my quick checks, Madrid registrations for August 5th like
Reg. No. 7,877,282
Registered Aug. 05, 2025
OWNER OF INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION 1838609 DATED 01-07-2025,
EXPIRES 01-07-2035
SER. NO. 79-416,815, FILED 01-07-2025
include the international registration number, but Madrid registrations for August 12th like
Reg. No. 7,885,743
Registered Aug. 12, 2025
SER. NO. 79-423,985, FILED 12-02-2024
do not include the international registration number. I checked a few registration certificates for August 19th & August 26th also, and those did not include the international registration number.

On the TMEP, the search for "international registration number" only retrieves 3 references, namely

for what that's worth (i.e., I doubt the TMEP states any requirement that international registration numbers must be included on registration certificates, but I don't search the TMEP often).

I did a search "SN:79* AND RD:[2025-09-07 TO 2025-09-28]" and the first four hits all lacked the "owner of international registration" text. I stopped clicking after seeing it four times in a row. I imagine a curious person with more energy than me could tinker with that search and maybe work out when the USPTO mistake started.

I suppose one thing to investigate is whether the presence of "owner of international registration" text is actually required by law or rule or TMEP. If it is not actually required, then I guess this may be simply a cost-cutting measure.

Years ago when the USPTO began publishing patent applications, the pub would list the firm name on the front page. Then I guess some beancounter noticed that the law did not require this info to be there. And the USPTO stopped providing that information. It could be a similar thing here maybe.

Do Registration Certificates for Madrid marks no longer show the International Registration information? I just received the second or third in which there’s no mention of an International Registration, whereas this is what they used to show something like this:

OWNER OF INTERNATIONAL REGISTRATION 1794266 DATED 05-06-2024,

EXPIRES 05-06-2034

I called TAC about 3-4 weeks ago to ask for a reprint of the first one I encountered, and was assured it was a USPTO mistake that would be corrected, but it hasn’t yet been fixed and I’ve since received a few more like it.

Best regards,

Katherine
