Subject: Re: [Patentpractice] Ass Center doesn't find application

No need to apologize.

One reason why there's no need to apologize is that the designers of Ass. Center have probably gone out of their way to avoid openly revealing when they do code changes. I have not been able to find any version number displayed anywhere in Ass. Center. So they might change code here or there without telling the users. This would then mean that the system would behave differently on a Tuesday from its behavior the previous Monday, and we the users would not know whether it means we did something wrong or some other explanation for it.

And bug tracking for Ass. Center will be at least as much of a miserable experience for us, the users, as is bug tracking for Patent Center.

Similarly, risk tracking for DOCX is a miserable experience for us, the users, because the USPTO designers of the DOCX black-box engine go out of their way to avoid revealing any version number changes or code changes.

So no need to apologize.

And yes, the term "new normal" as you use it will surely end up being a moving target from day to day.

Oh by the way. If some listserv member has extra time on their hands, I suppose it would make sense to snoop around inside the PDF and DOCX files that are inside the IFW of an application that was filed using DOCX, to see whether the developers may have slipped up and revealed the version number of the DOCX black-box rendering engine somewhere in the metadata of the PDF or DOCX files.

I wonder if maybe the thing to do is a FOIA request asking for the version history for the DOCX black-box rendering engine. Just the dates and version numbers, nothing more, so they can't jerk us around on their unwillingness to reveal the source code.

I apologize if this has already been discussed, but I filed a provisional application 4 days ago and still can’t record an Assignment for that application because Ass Center says “No Properties available.” Is this the new normal or is there an issue with the application that I’ll need to look into? I see the application in Patent Center, but do see the status is “undergoing preexam processing.” Didn’t we used to be able to record an assignment immediately after filing an application?

Best regards,

Katherine
