Variations on this US-centric version of the old Chinese scam have been discussed here. The MO appears to be identity theft of a real attorney but often one who may not be in active practice so that the real attorney can’t be readily located.

One of my clients got one in the name of a CA attorney who did not have full contact info on the CA bar website and was off in Europe doing business deals.

In an oddity it appears such a scammer uncharacteristically used the name of one of our list members who was in active practice and easily locatable. See emails on July 21-22, 2025.

According to the CA bar, there is a criminal attorney named Richard E. Robinson, probably in his early 70s based on bar admittance date.

At least with that scam, they weren’t making representations about your right to use your own name except for the domain in question.
